Abstract

Infections acquired in the health care setting have emerged as an important public health problem worldwide and are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in developed and developing countries. Renal dialysis patients may carry blood borne pathogens, and therefore, pose risk to health care professionals treating them and to the other patients being treated in the dialysis units. They also may have weakened immune systems and more vulnerable to infection. Infection control refers to polices and procedures used to minimize the risk of spreading infections, standard precautions are a set of clinical practice recommendations to help minimize the risk of exposure to infectious materials such as blood and other body fluids by both clients and staff, standard precautions help break the disease transmission cycle at the mode of transmission step. All dialysis providers are advised to follow official CDC recommendations regarding standard precautions and infection control in dialysis settings. Effective nursing interventions can control and prevent infection; the nurse reviews the assessment data, considers the cycle of events that result in the development of infection. Using infection control technique and application of standard precautions which include hand washing, using of personal protective equipment, environmental cleaning, respiratory hygiene and cough etiquette, linen and waste management with safe sharp disposal are nurses’ responsibilities to control and / or prevent infection in health care setting.
