Abstract

Dexamethasone is a potent synthetic member of the glucocorticoid,it acts as an anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressant drug. In this work, some immunological studies were done on xamcthasone for evaluation of the dexamethasone irnmuno- ppressant effects on neutrophil cells. Twenty five healthy rabbits of ,ther sex were included in this study. Blood samples were collected em rabbits for separation of neutrophils. Neutrophils were cultured in culture media, the effects of :examethasone on them were tested at three different doses (150, 500 lIld 2000 ug/ml) and then, dexamethasone effects on phagocytic tivity, bactericidal activity, nitro blur tetrazolium reduction test and ’Itrie oxide production were investigated. Concerning the dexamethasone effect on the phagocytic activity, enrophil cells were cultured and the heat inactivated C. albicans was ded to neutrophils and the phagocytic activity was investigated. The :ells uptake to heat inactivated C. albicans was higher in control < enrophils unexposed to dexamethasone than that exposed to eamethasone at concentrations of 150, 500 and 2000 ug/rnl at Jferent time points at 2, 4 and 6 hours and the number of yeast
:ontained per individual neutrophil decreased by increasing the < lexamethasone dose for longer incubation time. For further evaluation of dexamethasone on the bactericidal < tivity, the neutrophil cells were cultured and S. aureus was added
