Abstract

Among infectious diseases, tuberculosis (TB) is one of the most frequent causes of death in the world, with more than 2 million TBBrelated deaths reported each year.
The administration of INH and RIF, the most common medication prescribed against tuberculosis, produces many metabolic and morphological aberrations in liver due to the fact that liver is the main detoxifying site for these antitubercular drugs.
The experimental work was done in forensic and toxicology department, Faculty of medicine, El-Minia University in a period of April to June 2011.
This work was done to study the protective effect of garlic and vitamin E against Isoniazid and Rifampicin hepatotoxicity. One hundred and eighty adult male albino rats weighting 150-200 grams were included in this study.
They were divided into 8 groups, one control and the other 7 for the drugs. Group I is subdivided into 4 sub groups la, Ib, Ie, and Id. Group II ingested Garlic oil, group III ingested Vitamin E, group IV ingested Garlic oil and vitamin E, group V ingested Isoniazid and Rifampicin, group VI ingested Isoniazid, Rifampicin, and Garlic oil, group VII ingested Isoniazid, Rifampicin, and Vitamin E, group VIII ingested Isoniazid, Rifampicin, Garlic oil, and Vitamin E .The ingestion was done through orogastric tube.
