Abstract The Cichorium intybus belongs to the family Asteraceae. The Cichorium intybus ethanolic extract contains carbohydrate, tannins, resin, saponins, alkaloids, and flavonoids as active constituents. LD50 of ethanolic extract of Cichorium intybus orally administration in mice was 8700mg/kg.b.wtThe Cichorium intybus ethanolic extract at dose (870,435 mg/kg.b.wt), had antioxidant activity as well as hepatoprotective effect against CCL4 at rats , anti inflammatory, analgesic and diuretic effect but showed no effect on antipyretic at the same dose. Ithad stimulant followed by inhibition effect on the intestinal motilityand stimulant effect on the uterine contraction at estrus and late of pregnant. Orall administration for 2 month at dose (870 mg/kg b.wt), increased thePCV, neutrophiles, lymphocytes and liver enzymes, reducing the body weight, reducing the sperms count and increasing the percentage of dead and abnormal sperms at male of rats , The extract had anticancer effect on liver and colon but lesser effect on Breast cancer. |
