Abstract The present study planned to outline the effect of aging on the different eye structures of albino rats. The corneal endothelium lining the descemet’s membrane was damaged. Massive degeneration of retinal layers was detected in females comparing with males. In addition, the epithelium lining the ciliary bodies was markedly atrophied and partially degenerated. In females, There was a massive degeneration of the epithelium lining the ciliary body. Lens mineral content of calcium, sodium and cupper were markedly increased during aging, however, the magnesium content was decreased. Regarding retina, the nerve fiber and gangilion layer attained a considerable thinning. The inner plexiform become vacuolated and the inner and outer nuclear layers attained a considerable reduction. The photoreceptors become fragile and degenerated. On the other hand, 42 months old females showed massive loss of retinal neuronal cells as well as neovascularization and missing of gangilion and nerve cells. The assayed neurotransmitters and antioxidants were markedly increased at 6 months old and gradually decrease with subsequent increase of aging. |
