Abstract

Nosocomial infection is an infection acquired during hospital care which was not present or incubated at the time of admission. This infection can be prevented by following recommended infection control procedures.
Aim of the work: To improve quality of infection control performance at dentist clinic in Zagazig university hospital through the following objectives: 1- Assessment of knowledge, attitude and performance of dentist clinic staff concerning infection control practice.2- Improve defects in knowledge, attitude and performance of infection control measures among dental staff by 50% through application of health education program. 3- Assessment of knowledge, attitude and performance of dentist clinic staff concerning infection control practice after intervention.
Subjects and methods: An intervention study was carried out in dentist clinic at Zagazig university hospital. Accessible sample of all doctors and nurses working in the clinic was selected. All staff member were interviewed to assess their knowledge and attitude regarding infection control practice also their performance was observed .This was considered as pretest. Analysis of pretest data was done to know the points of defect among dental staff concerning infection control practice. Health education program was applied for all clinic staff for improving weak points and then reevaluation was done after three months by using the same questionnaire and checklist.Tools:1-Questionnaire: pre and post test to measure knowledge and attitude of staff concerning infection control practice.2-Performance check list including standard precaution.3-Booklets, posters, data show slides . Ethical consideration: informed verbal consent was obtained from staff member to be enrolled in this study. A written permission from Zagazig hospital manager, and dental clinic manager was obtained to perform the study.
Results: The lowest level of knowledge in pretest: was detected in disposal of Sharp items (67.4%), Use eye glasses or face shields(73.9%) , Change mask when become wet (73.9%)and Change protective clothes if dirty or soiled with blood(76.1%) all of these items improved in posttest but with no statistical significant difference .The worst level of attitude in pretest was: in effectiveness of wearing eye glasses or face shields in preventing hospital infection as very high effectiveness represent only(26.1%) and in effectiveness of wearing protective clothes in preventing hospital infection very high effectiveness represent only(23.9%) also, all of these items improved in posttest with statistical significant difference in effectiveness of protective clothes, The worst of practice: was in use facemasks (10.9%),change it between patients(8.6%),change protective clothing when it is visibly soiled(0.0%) and Disposal of sharp items in a puncture resistant containers(0.0%) all these items improved markedly after intervention with high statistical significant difference.Conclusions: knowledge of dentists about infection control procedures can be improved significally by training and health education.
