Abstract

Many attempts have been carried out in the field of studying and designing of high strength and ultra-high strength concrete in order to obtain concrete mixes having the required properties, but it was noticed that most of studies focused on the physical and mechanical properties of these types of concretes, although the studying of the durability of these kinds of concretes which may be used in the construction of buildings exposed to aggressive environments such as infrastructures and water structures is important.
In this thesis, different classes of concrete with a wide range of compressive strength (i.e., 250 to 1100 kg/cm2) were manufactured using local materials and their mechanical properties (i.e., compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and flexural strength) as well as their durability-related properties (i.e., permeability, water absorption, abrasion and behavior of concrete against sea water attack) were determined. Furthermore, the experimental results showed that it is possible to produce concrete with compressive strength in excess of 1000 kg/cm2 using local materials available in Egypt. Furthermore, the suggested mathematical equations can be used to predict the properties of concrete based on its compressive strength and exposure period to sea water.
