Abstract

The present study aimed at investigating the effective-ness of a suggested program based on the Whole Language Approach in developing the essay writing skills of a sample of student-teachers in the English department at Ain Shams University College for Girls.
To determine the most important essay writing skills to be developed throughout the program, a checklist was designed and approved by a jury of subject matter specialists. An instructional program based on the Whole Language Approach and writing as a process was also designed to develop the essay writing skills of the experimental group. The program was taught over a period of two months and a half.
By the end of the treatment a post-test was administered to both the experimental and the control groups to find out the effectiveness of the suggested program in developing student-teachers’ essay writing skills.
The results provided support for the hypotheses of the study and showed evidence that :
There were statistically significant differences at 0.01 level between the mean scores of the control group and the experimental group on the post-test in favour of the experimental group in overall essay writing. Besides there were statistically significant differences at 0.01 level between the mean scores of the control group and the experimental group on the post-test in favour of the experimental group in each essay writing sub-skill : content, organization, language use, and mechanics.
