Abstract

Reliability of Water distribution network refers to the ability of the system to provide
adequate performance for consumers considering abnormal operating conditions. In
case of link failure occurs, which is used as a measure of the mechanical reliability of
the network, it is necessary to close a subset of valves which directly separate a small
portion of the network. The use of isolation valves can cause a demand shortage to
some consumers; the number of consumers affected will depend on the extent of
valving in the system.
When valves are operated to isolate a portion of the distribution system, they do not
isolate a single pipe link but a portion of the system which may correspond to a part
of a single pipe or several pipes and their junctions. It is important during hydraulic
design to test for the effect of losing individual segments of the distribution system
taking into consideration the location of valves when simulating the effect of losing
such segment. The key to improve the reliability of the distribution system is to install
sufficient valves so that the outage can be limited to a small portion of the system.
This work aims to improve network mechanical reliability which refers to system
components failure, such as pipe breaks. The analysis of isolation valve system
always has been performed as a part of the assessment of system reliability.
Therefore, it is important to identify the association between each subset of valves and
the segments directly isolated by closing them and unintended isolation. Thus, this
paper studies the impact of alternatives isolation valve systems design in water
distribution network. The alternatives design rules has been performed for (EI-
Mamoura water distribution network, Alexandria, Egypt) as a case study. This
approach uses rules of thumb as the valve system design tool and the algorithm
proposed by Giustolisi et al. as the hydraulic simulation solver. The application of the
method on the network shows its capability to solve such actual Reliability basedcost
effective problems. In addition, the results show the reliability of the applied
algorithm to obtain the costeffectivc valve system design of El-Mamoura water
distribution network.
