Abstract

This study was conducted to detect the prevalence of autoimmune hepatitis in chronic hepatitis C patients.The study was conducted on 60 patients suffering from chronic hepatitis C referred to Tropical Medicine department, faculty of Medicine, Menoufiya University.All cases were subjected to full medical history , thorough clinical examination, biochemical tests (serum bilirubin, AST , ALT and serum albumin) , blood picture, abdominal ultrasonography and determination of serum autoantibody (ANA, LKM 1) using indirect immunoflurecent assay.All patients were proved to have HCV and negative to HBV and HIV. Serum detection of autoantibodies revealed: ANA was detected in 9 patients (15%) and LKM 1 was detected in 1 patient (1.7%).The most common reported symptom in chronic hepatitis C patients was fatigue (98.3%) and the most common detected sign There was no statistically significant differences between males and females as regards laboratory findings There was significantly higher in females than males as regards the autoimmune antibodies (ANA and LKM 1).
