Abstract The mam objective of the present study was to investigate the treatment and protective effect of licorice on peptic ulcer in rats. Forty two adult male Albino rats were used in this study, Animals were divided into 7 groups; G 1 negative control, G2 positive control for treatment groups, G3 positive control for protective groups, two treatment groups (G4 and G5) and two protective groups (G6 and G7). Licorice used as decoction and used in two concentrations 10% and 15%. In the treatment groups, aspirin (400 mg/kg,) was given orally at the beginning of the experimental to induce peptic ulcer; and treated with licorice to 28 day. The protective groups had given aspirin in the same dose at the end of the experiment. Histopathological examination of treatment groups showed that licorice has strong treatment effect on peptic ulcer in both two concentrations of licorice. However, histopathological examinations of protective effect groups showed that licorice had a moderate effect in the protect stomach against aspirin in both 10% and 15% ALE concentration, but the higher concentration of licorice (15%) was the better than 10%. So the results of this study suggest that licorice can be used for the treatment of peptic ulcer and can protect the stomach against non- steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs induced ulcers. |
