Abstract

lAgave is a genus of monocots which have succulent, edible stalks, leaves flowers, rosette and sap are also considered as food items. The sap is known
agave syrup or agave nectar and it is considered as an excellent and healthy ative to sugar for the purpose of cooking. The plants are perennial, but h rosette flowers once and then dies that is why they are commonly known as century plant (Gentry, 1982).
Agave is chiefly Mexican and is also native to the southern and western nited States and central and tropical South America (Bailey et al, 1976). Agave ludes 166 species and is the largest genus in the family Agavaceae that nsists of9 genera (Eguiarte et al, 2000).
Studies on species belonging to genus Agave had shown that they have . erse biological activities some of which are; anti-inflammatory activity, activity, anti-cancer activity, molluscicidal, analgesic and
Agave americana for example was found to have anti -allergic activity wai et al; 2000), anti -cancer activity (Yokosuka et al, 2000), and anti¬mmatory activity (Peana et al, 1997). The Agave lophantha Schiede is other example that was found to have analgesic, antipyretic and ulcero otective activities (Abdel-khalik et al, 2002). This encouraged us to choose e Agave angustifolia leaves to work on it in my master thesis. Our studies and investigation on the Agave angustifolia showed that it has analgesic, anti¬cancer, molluscicidal ceracricidal, miracidicidal and histosomicidal activities.
Such activities are mainly contributed to the presence of saponins; which are high molecular weight glycosides consisting of either a steroid (Cn) or a triterpene (C30) aglycone attached to one or more sugar moieties (Riguera, 1997; Yoshiki et al, 1998). However; Agave is well known to be rich with the steroidal
