Abstract

The present study is a cross sectional investigation of the specific reading problems that dyslexic readers show when they cognitively and phonologically process the Arabic language compared to normal readers. One of the main goals of the present study was the designing of a dyslexia diagnosing test in Arabic. The test battery included 14 measures that targeted various phonological, morphological, syntactic, and orthographic awareness skills in the Arabic language. The study included 15 dyslexics that represented the experimental group and 29 normal readers as a control group.
The thesis proceeded in five chapters. Results were summarized in the fifth chapter and showed various areas of impairment in the reading and writing processes of the Arabic language in the dyslexic group. The performance of dyslexics in all tasks was lower than that of the normal readers. Evidence of the effect of the nature of Arabic orthography on the reading abilities of dyslexics was discussed. Moreover, other elements such as the complicated nature of Arabic morphology influenced both the syntactic awareness and word identification processing skills for dyslexics. The diaglossic effect of the spoken vernacular on the performance of dyslexics was also discussed. Finally, no age or gender related differences could be identified regarding the dyslexic group performance.
