Abstract

Vulvovaginitis is the most common gyneco-logical problem in prepubertal girls. Although actual incidence is unknown, it is commonly encountered in general practice. The term vulvovaginitis denotes an inflammatory process involving both the vulva and the vagina. The most common and troublesome symptoms of this disease are vaginal discharge, pruritus, irritation, erythema, and soreness.
Nursing role is mainly concerned with the primary prevention of vulvovaginitis through elevating the public health awareness among the population, conducting health educational program about this problem, explaining the risk factors of disease, secondary prevention by explaining the importance of screening, early detection, proper treatment and follow up.
The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of self-instruction booklet for preadolescent girls to prevent risk factors of vulvovaginitis through assess risk factors of vulvovaginitis among preadolescent girls, design self-instruction booklet about self- care hygienic to eliminate vulvovaginitis among preadolescent girls, and evaluate effect of self-instruction booklet on developing self care skills for prevention of vulvovaginitis.
This study was conducted in 3 primary schools from different governorates (Cairo, Elmonofaya, and Elqalubia) in the period from October 2009 to April 2010.
The study sample consisted of (180) primary school students girls in 5th and 6th grade selected randomly from three schools. Girls who have not menstruated, different socio-economic standard, religion and residence were included.
The data were collected through:
Structured interviewing questionnaire was designed by the researcher after reviewing the relative literature, and pre/post assessment sheet for knowledge of girls toward hygienic measures to prevent vulvovaginitis.
Results of the present study revealed that:
• Most of studied girls were have unsatisfactory knowledge about vulvovaginitis but there is highly statistically significant regarding change of knowledge of studied girls post booklet utilization.
• A statistically significant relation existed between girls’ sociodemographic characteristics and incidence of vulvovaginitis.
• Self-instruction booklet has a positive effect on the knowledge and practice of girls about prevention of vulvovaginitis.
The present study recommended to:
• Counseling programs must be designed for prepubertal girls about importance of personal hygiene and its impact on diseases prevention.
• Increase awareness of mothers through workshops and sessions in outpatient clinics or schools to discuss vulvovaginitis preventive measures.
• Integrate and enhance role of nurses in the schools as health educator through periodic training program to help in early detection of vulvovaginitis and prevention.
