Abstract

Fearing health hazards due to drug misuse seems to have attracted the
attention of many investigators. The percentage of current cancers attributable
to long-term drug use is rising steadily. Awareness of potential drug
complications will enable physicians to prevent some untoward reactions and
to promptly recognize and treat others.
Adriamycin is an effective chemotherapeutic agent in the treatment of
various neoplasms, however, until now the focus of concern for human health
hazards from this antibiotic has been upon its cardiotoxicity, but other side
effects did not seem to have received much attention by research workers.
Chloramphenicol (CAP) is another popular, broad-spectrum antibiotic,
which has enjoyed extensive use in both medical and veterinary practice, but
now its propensity for producing blood dyscrasia has become recognized and as
a consequence, the use of CAP in many countries is now restricted to just a few
indications. Moreover, in other countries, it has been entirely withdrawn from
the markets, but still in Egypt, CAP is continued to be used for common
conditions.
