Abstract

The 011 gene is an adipocyte specific gene that encodes leptin, a protein ~hat regulates body weight.
An impre: ,sive amount of research during the last few years has demonstn ted that a number of physiological factor:; affect the expressiOll of leptin m RNA and leptin levels in hUlnan e . g : diurnal va ~iation , food intake, exercise, insulin le’lel and cytokines,
Leptir has central action on the eNS by decrea~;ing food intake thrc lugh a number of hypothalamic mediator:; e.g :
1) N euroI= eptide Y (NPY), which is the most potent appetite stimulant 1escribed and it is the central effector of leptin deficienc) as injection of leptin intra cerebroventil~ularly decreased the level of mRNA for NPY in the arcua1 e nucleus,
2) Leptin ncreased the level of mRNA of an inhibi’:or of food intake. Vv hich is corticotrophin-releasing hormone in the paraventri ~ular nucleus.
3) Sertoni 1. Which might interact with leptin in the regulation of feeding ar d body weight.
4) Melanc trophine .
In additio: l to its effect on appetite ,leptin increases energy expenditu ’e, and this may be an additional mechani sm by which leptin reglllates body weight.
