Abstract

Osteoporosis or (porous) is a disease in which bones become weak and one more likely to break or fracture. Without prevention or treatment, osteoporosis can progress without pain or symptoms until a fracture occurs. fractures commonly occur in hip-spine and wrist and ribs.
Aim
• To reduce osteoporosis prevalence and its complication among premenopausal and menopausal women in Heria Razna village Zagazig center Sharkia governorate.
Objectives
1- To determine the prevalence and risk factors of osteoporosis among premenopausal women in Heria Razana Village.
2- To assess the level of knowledge about osteoporosis and its prevention among premenopausal women in Heria Razana Village.
3- To conduct a health education intervention program about osteoporosis and its prevention among premenopausal women in Heria Razana Village.
4-To assess the effect of the health education intervention program on osteoporosis knowledge and prevalence among premenopausal women in Heria Razana Village.
Subjects and methods
It was cross sectional and interventional study (pre and posttest) which carried out on a sample of 150 premenopausal women aged from 40-50 years in Heria-Razana village, Zagazig center, Sharkia governorate during the period from March to Augest 2010.
The study carried out on the selected females as follows:
• First stage (pre test or pre intervention stage ) .
• Second stage (intervention stage) .
• Third stage (post – intervention stage).
A) First stage:
1. First part: includes demographic data as age, education, occupation, marital statues, number of children and habits.
2. Second part: includes osteoporosis questionnaire (OPQ) (Pande et al., 2005) and osteoporosis knowledge test (OKT) (Redman, 2003) to assess osteoporosis knowledge including general knowledge, risk factors, prevention, associated disease, diagnosis and lines of treatment.
3. Third part: patients were confirmed to have osteoporosis by U.S evaluation.
B) Second stage:
Selected women were given educational session to cover all information about, osteoporosis such as knowledge about:
• Osteoporosis definition, concept of peak bone mass across life span, importance of early start prevention, risk factors, symptoms, diagnosis, diet rich in calcium and vit-D, type of physical exercise, importance of sun exposure and what to communicate with others about osteoporosis and it’s prevention .
• The message was formulated in appropriate method such as lectures and discussion in addition the use of teaching aids, such as printed material (posters, procuress ) and CDs contain (video and lectures). This message was given after filling questionnaire.
• The educational sessions were held in Family center in Heria-Razna Village to every 50 women in 2 sessions, each session took 30 minutes.
C) Third stage:
• Posttest was done to assess the effect of health education program on osteoporosis knowledge among premenopausal women by using the same questionnaire filled before and the U.S evaluation which done two months after the intervention.
