Abstract The purpose of this study was to gain insight into the role of c-erb-2 as agrowth factor receptor gene and vimentin as an intermediate filament protein in salivary gland neoplasmas. An investigation of the expression of c-erb-2 and vimentin on the histopathological alterations of salivary gland neoplasmas was conducted.Atotal of 30 paraffin blocks of different benign and malignant salivary gland neoplasms were included.Tissue specimens were routinely processed, sectioned at 5 u thickness , prepared and stained with H&E to identify the histopathologic findings. For immunohstochemical staining,5 u deparaffinized serial sections were prepared and stained with monoclonal antibodies against c-erbB-2 and vemintin.Following the microscopic examination, the results were statistically analysed and compared , using image analyzer to determine the average area percentage, for significant correlation with the tumor cell behaviour. 1- A noticeable difference was found in the expressions of c-erbB-2 and vimentin in neoplastic cells in benign salivary gland tumors compared to those of malignant salivary gland tumors. 2-Overexpression of c-erbB-2 was statistically correlated with salivary gland neoplasms that had larger sizes compared to those of smaller sizes.- 3-Overexpression of c-erbB-2 was statistically correlated with malignant salivary gland neoplasms that had lymph node involvement |
