Abstract

The study area compresses outcrops of various sedimentary rock units of Paleozoic age which are nonconfom1ably overlying the basement rock units mainly of granites, old granitoids and diorites. The exposed Paleozoic rocks and sediments in southwestem Sinai are considered one of the important resources for different valuable elements. The main rock formations in the studied area from the old to young are; Abu Thora Formatio, Urn Bogma Formation, Adedia Formation, Naseib Formation, Abu Hamata Formation, Sarabit EI Khadim Formation.
The studied area has typically an arid climate. The rainfall controls the amount of water available for chemical weathering while temperature affects the mechanical weathering.
Some field trips were done to the study area by the aid of the supervisors. Through these field trips, 50 samples were collected as grab samples from six localities namely; Abu Thor, Abu E1Mogherat, Wadi Naseib, W. Moreid, EI Gor and Farsh EI Ebidiya.
The mineralogy and geochemistry of 13 samples were studied. The mineral identification was carried out by XRD analysis either for the bulk samples or for heavy fractions. The most important minerals identified are gibbsite, woodrufite, wolframite, rhabdophane, danalite, groutite, chalcocite, paratacamite and chalcophanite.
To understand the geochemical processes and the evolution of the various types of sediments, chemical analysis is needed. In the present study, major oxides, trace elements as well as rare earth elements were determined. Relationships
. between major oxides-major oxides and major oxides- trace elements were made. The correlation coefficient (r) was calculated and discussed. Apparently, Si02, Ah03 and Fe203 dominated in most localities. Regarding to the trace elements, fifteen elements were analyzed including Ag, Au, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Sr, Th, U, V, Zn and Zr. Eight representative samples from the different localities were chosen to be analyzed in acme analytical laboratories lid vancouer, canda for determination of individual rare earth elemens and another number of trace elements beside that of the samples analyzed in egypt.
