Abstract
The present study focuses on evaluating the effect of two different contraceptive pills including combined pills( estrogen and progesterone) and mIll I pills(progesterone only) on adult female rabbit.
After three months of daily oral administration of these contraceptive pills the animals were decapitated and dissected for excision of the kidney, ovary, uterus and cervix for light microscopic using H&E, PAS for demonstration of carbohydrates, Masson s trichrom stain for collagenous fibres ,orcen for elastic fiber content and immuno histochemical stains for alpha smooth muscle actin( aSMA) in ovary and ang ii in kidney . This was followed by morphometric measurements and statistical analysis of the results
The present study revealed that contraceptive pills administration specialy the combined one caused histological , histochemical and immunohistochemical changes in the rabbit tissue represented by increasing ang ii content in kidney tubules and increasing in alpha smooth muscle actin content Histological studies of the combined pills-treated animals showed damaged uriniferous tubules including cell swelling leading to obliterated lumen and enlarged glomeruli with hypercellularity . A moderat change was observed after mini pill treatment.
The reproductive organs showed marked altretions under treatment with combined pills such as increase in both collagenous and elastic fibers content, hyperplastic mucosa cells and increasing in mucus secretion in cervix and uterus.
Atretic follicles were found in ovary ,even the preserved oogonia in tunica albuginea were scarse, and the ovarian interstitial cells were highly vacuolated. In addition to increased collagenous content.
The progesterone only pills show moderate effect in all reproductive organs.
In conclusion, contraceptive pills specially the combined one induced histological changes in the kidney and reproductive organs and must be taken carefuly under doctor supervision and not be taken for a long time.
