Abstract

Architectural fabric structure is a new replaced traditional structure because of its wide field of usages and its famous advantages. It can significantly reduce the volume of materials required in construction, so architectural fabrics are lighter in weight and more economical to design and manufacture than normal buildings. The presence of fabrics materials offers two main advantages, high tenacity to give good strength-to-weight ratio and translucency. They are very strong for their light weight, which enables them to cover large areas with little material with less number of columns. The translucency of fabrics allows natural lighting inside, which often eliminates the need for artificial lighting at day. Fabrics are available in a wide range of colors, weights, and widths to fit designs. High performance properties in an architectural fabric are achieved by the proper selection of the base fiber, the selected fabric weave, the appropriate formulated coating compounds and the coating processes utilized to produce the fabric. [n this work the effect of architectural fabrics structural parameters on their mechanical properties were studied theoretically and experimentally. The experimental work was divided into two parts; the first part is to design and construct an apparatus for measuring the biaxial properties of the fabrics. The second part consists of fetching and producing fabrics that are similar to the fabrics which are used in architectural fabrics with different specifications. Therefore, different sets of fabric specimens with different dimensions were prepared according to the type of test applied. These specimens were tested on the fabric tensile tester and the developed biaxial tensile apparatus to study the effect of the structural parameters of the architectural fabrics on their mechanical properties. The theoretical study was divided into two paIis; the first part is developing a theoretical model to predict the change in the fabric dimensions under biaxial loading. The second part includes Finite Element Modeling (FEM) of architectural fabrics using ANSYS software. from this work it was found that the mechanical properties of the architectural fabrics were influenced by tre properties of both the base fabrics and the coating materials and their constructions. The finite element modeling showed a good agreement with the experimental results and the parametric study determined successfully the main construction parameters that affect the behavior of the architectural fabrics.
