Abstract

Today, more than ever before, high qualified nurses must be techni¬cally competent and well-informed. Today’s high qualified nurse is called upon to operate highly sophisticated equipment, manage groups of patients, and be skilled in computer technology.
Additionally, the high qualified nurse must understand concepts of interpersonal relations in order to collabo¬rate with patients and other health care professionals. Sound critical reasoning competencies based upon a solid foundation in the arts, sciences, and humanities are crucial for today’s high qualified nurses who, in many cases, practices outside the hospitals in patients’ homes, in hospices, in nursing homes, in industrial sites, and in the commu¬nity at large.
Educational programs for nursing professionals must pro¬vide courses and curriculum experiences which will prepare student to deal with both the present and future demands of patient care.
At the heart of the curriculum is an excellent faculty with extensive academic and clinical skills. So many factors affecting student’s clinical achievements especially in obstetrical and gynecological nursing skills.
The aim of Study
The aim of the present study was to assess factors affecting student’s achievements to obstetrical and gynecological nursing skills as viewed by the student.
Subjects & Methods
Setting:
The study was conducted in obstetric and Gynecological Department in faculty of nursing Ain shams University.
Sample:
All third year students enrolled in the Obstetrical and Gynecological Departments about 190 students during one academic year (2009-2010) in faculty of nursing Ain shams University in both semesters included in the study.
Data collection was done through the use of several tools.
1) Structured questionnaire sheet used to student to assess their sociodemographic characteristics such as (age, sex, marital condition residence, educational back ground to the student … extra)
2) Factors affecting Student achievements tool to obtain direct factors in which limite or enhance their practical achievements of obstetrical and gynecological nursing skills.
A pilot study was carried out on 19 student who represented 10% of the pre designed sample size, to test the clarity and applicability of the tool and estimate the time required to fill the sheet. Modifications on the tool were carried out according to the results of the pilot study .The researcher found that some questions should be added in and other should be removed in the questionnaire.
Field Work
The study tool was used by the researcher to collect data from the student of third year in obstetric and Gynecological department in faculty of nursing at Ain Shams University. Every participant of student was approached individually.
The aim of the study was explained, and oral consent obtained from the student the researcher using questionnaire sheet for the student to assess the sociodemographic characteristics it contain (age, sex, marital status, residence, living condition, educational back ground and income support) and Factors affecting Student achievements tool, so the researcher using scoring system for measure the satisfaction level consider 3 for satisfy 2 for uncertain 1 for dissatisfy moreover the final achievement level of the student.
The data collection period was from the beginning of academic year of 2009 to the end of 2010. The researcher visited the clinical area of training of obstetric and Gynecological department in Ain Shams University twice per week from 8.30 am to 1.00 pm.
The result of the study can be summarized into the following:
• The socio-demographic characteristic of the student in the study sample were revealed that around three quarters of student (75.3%) within twenty years old or more on the other hand the majority of student (95.5%) were single, also about more than half of student (55.3%) were living in the university city more over more than one half (56.8%) have a constant income support not enough.
• This study was also reflected that more than (55%) totally satisfy from lab infrastructure as factors it interfere with their achievement while the minority of student (2.93%) only unsatisfied number of lab enough, light in lab enough.
• Less than one third of student (32%) was totally satisfied from while less than one third of student unsatisfied (24.42%).
• More than one third of student (39.6%) were satisfy from support obtained by their instructor in the clinical training, while the minority of student (13.9%) were unsatisfied and less than half (46.3%) were uncertain.
• More than half (51.1%) of the student were satisfy from the procedure book support the achievements of course aim
• Highlights that total student’s satisfaction from evaluation process were37.68% also the same percentage were uncertain while24.63%unsatisfied.
• Regarding to the final evaluation (67.9%) two thirds of students have a very good evaluation degree while no body has an excellent or poor evaluation also less than one third 32.1% have good evaluation degree.
• As regards the relation between the socio-demographic characteristic and student’s clinical achievement the present study clarified that was highly significant difference.
• In assessing the relationship between student’s satisfactions from factors interfere with the educational process achievement level to the specified nursing skills the present study highly significant relation.
The study conclusion that
In the light of the study findings, some important facts could be concluded that:
• The students were satisfied from lab infrastructures as a factor interfere skill acquisition.
• Student satisfaction from hospital training represent less than one third of the total sample.
• Minority of student were unsatisfied from instructors support during clinical training and the recommended procedure book.
• None of the student reach to excellent levels at final clinical evaluation but two third of student reached to very good level and one third reached to good level.
• Highly significances relation proved between student socio-demographic characteristics and their achievement level to Obstetric and gynecological nursing skills.
• Highly significances relation proved between student’s satisfaction and student achievement level to the specified nursing skills.
The study recommended that
Based on the results of this study, the following were recommended:
• Student orientation strategies to increase student awareness about the rights and responsibilities for quality clinical achievements.
• In-service training programs for faculty’s staff about quality of teaching and learning process.
• Quality principles should be considered and assessed in relation to educational clinical skills.
