Abstract

Biomaterials used in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering are often designed to act as scaffolds for tissue growth in three dimensions (3D) leaving the body to remodel the tissue to its natural form.
This study aimed to optimize poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) in the form of 3D-injectable hydrogel through physical crosslinking, to act as a veihcle for bioactive glass particles (BG) thus to be with sufficient mechanical strength in the injectable form. This is believed to be the least invasive and the most surgeon friendly form for biomedical and tissue engineering applications.
The prepared PVA scaffolds with various percents were characterized for their mechanical behavior, crystal structure, thermal and thermo-mechanical properties.
The PVA 25% (w/v)% has been selected among the prepared percents to be loaded with bioactive glass particels, through the same physical crosslinking approach. The formed PVA-BG scaffold was achieved in 3D-injectable form, with enhanced mechanical and visco-elastic properties which could have a potential use in tissue engineering applications in the oral and maxillofacial region.
