Abstract

The emergency department (ED) is one of the major entryways to hospitals for a significant number of patients and often provides the patient’s first impression of the hospital experience. When patients enter ED with undiagnosed life-threatening conditions. Their survival depends on how fast and accurately the staff diagnose and treat their problems without making people wait for several hours.
As the demand for emergency medicine service increases, EDs are compelled to become more efficient at providing optimal patient care, this optimal care should be delivered in the right place, at the right time, in the right way, and by the right provider. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess ED patient care and the effect of this process on patient satisfaction.
Results of the Present Study:
Most of patients admitted to ED suffered from mild head injuries (80%). Males admitted were approximately five times than females, with incidence peaks in the age group 15 – 45 years (64%). The main cause of head injury was car accidents and constitute about half of patients (49%), and the majority of patients (65.0%) had concussion.
The mean waiting time through different time interval increased with decrease severity of head injury, except in the time interval II (from arriving to ED till departure to radiology department). While, the lowest mean of time spent was for moderate patients. Mild head injury patients had the longest mean of time spent in all time intervals in ED, follow by moderate and sever patients.
There was delay in X-ray department and CT department for some mild and moderate patients due to waiting for another patient or no apparent reason. There was delay in carrying out the order of calling specialists, CT order , and receiving CT result due to unavailability of workers, shortage in nurses, and waiting for specialists. And there was a considerable delay in assessment and treatment of moderate and mild patients by specialists.
