Abstract

Critical thinking is essential to prepare professional nurses with competencies necessary to high quality nursing performance within the rapidly changing health care environment. Some of these changes facing nursing today are an expansion in technology, consumer demand for quality care, pressure for cost containment, decreased length of stay in hospitals, complex disease processes and increased patient acuity. Therefore, healthcare organizations are continually seeking well-trained nurses that possess not only the technical skills to fulfill their roles, but more importantly, the thinking skills to be effective in a constantly changing environment.
The present study aimed to examining the relationship between the disposition of staff nurses toward critical thinking and quality of their performance at Mansoura University Hospital.
The subjects of this study included all nurses working in general medical and surgical units at Mansoura University Hospital. They represent all staff nurses responsible for providing nursing care to patients at time of data collection in the previously mentioned settings, with a minimum of one year experience. Their number were 95 staff nurses; 35 staff nurses working in medical units and 60 staff nurses working in the surgical units. Data of this study were collected by using two tools: the first tool; was The California Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory aimed to assess the disposition of staff nurses toward critical thinking. The second tool; was observation checklist to assess quality of staff nurses’ performance.
The results of this study shown the following findings:
•There was a statistical significant positive correlation between total critical thinking dispositions and staff nurses’ total quality of performance.
•More than half of staff nurses were positively scored regarding the total critical thinking dispositions.
•Truth seeking was the highest disposition among critical thinking dispositions, while maturity was the lowest for staff nurses working in both medical and surgical units.
•The majority of staff nurses had poor quality of performance.
• Medication was the highest dimension of performance among staff nurses at both medical and surgical units while psychosocial individual was the lowest.
