Abstract Semiconductor nanoparticles of zinc oxide, zinc sulfide, and cadmium sulfide were prepared and used in coating mixtures to treat the surface of paper sheets with the aim to prepare fluorescent coatings for security paper. The structure of the prepared semiconductor nanoparticles was examined using X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The properties of paper sheets coated with the prepared nanoparticles were studied regarding their strength (tensile strength and tear resistance) and their photo‐luminescent properties. The results showed the possibility to prepare fluorescent coating using simple method and starting chemicals and with different UV absorption and fluorescence emission. Effect of UV and thermal aging on the mechanical and optical properties of the coated paper sheet was also studied. Coating mixtures containing low concentrations of semiconductor nanoparticles of cadmium sulfide, zinc sulfide, and zinc oxide could be used to prepare paper sheets with different fluorescence properties. Presence of the semiconductor nanoparticles in the coating mixture improves tensile strength properties of paper sheets coated with coating mixtures containing the nanoparticles. |
