Abstract The present work was conducted to study the effect of garlic on serum total cholesterol , LDL , triglycerides , HDL and vascular reactivity ( aortic contractile response ) in hypercholesterolemic rats . Forty male albino rats , weighing ( 120-150 gm ) were used in this study . These animals were divided into equal groups : Group 1 , which consists of 10 rats and served as control group receiving normal diet Group 2 which consists of 10 rats and received high cholesterol diet ( cholesterol 2%) for 2 months Group 3 which consists of 10 rats and received high cholesterol diet (2%) and garlic (2.5mg/kg/day) for 2 months Group 4 which consists of 10 rats and received high cholesterol diet (2%) for 2 months and received garlic (2.5mg/kg/day) for 1 month Hypercholesterolemia was induced in albino rats by taking 2% cholesterol balanced diet for 2 months . The serum lipids were laboratory estimated . The rat aortic strip preparations were used to estimate changes of vascular reactivity to Norepinephrine , Acetylcholine . It was found that garlic 2.5mg/kg/day intragastric either for 1 month as treatment or for 2 months as prophylaxis showed significant lowering in total cholesterol level , triglycerides level and LDL level when compared with the hypercholesterolemic group .As regard isolated rat aorta , it also produced significant reduction in response to NE compared to the hypercholesterolemic group , and enhance the vasodilatory response to Ach compared to hypercholesterolemic group . |
