Abstract

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) integrate a large number of miniature computers, called nodes, into an environment. They become common and having many existing and envisioned applications due to their ease of deployment. WSNs are generally used to autonomously monitor an environment and either report data or take an action.
Advances in wireless technology made it possible to integrate it within embedded systems, either for communication with other systems, as well as between components within large systems. This allows cabling to be reduced and system installation and management to become more flexible. These aspects are very interesting in industry.
So, the integration of wireless sensor network is important issue, where, to achieve higher benefits from distributed architectures it is necessary to improve the integration among the system components to support or improve management and control.
In this context, a new type of network has been developed: HSVN (Hybrid Sensor and Vehicular Network) let WSNs (Wireless Sensor Network) and VA ETs (Vehicular Adhoc NETwork) cooperate through dynamic information exchanges with the aim to improve road safety, and especially to warn the driver and the co-pilot of any event occurred in the road in advance, such as traffic jam, accidents or bad weather. The results will be immediate: less accidents and therefore saved lives, less traffic means a fewer pollution, and from the technological point of view, this communication protocol will open the door to attractive service; in order to make the driver trip, such as providing multimedia services or internet browsing easier, safer and more comfortable.
Based on the foregoing, the thesis introduce a web application design with suitable interface; to provide meaningful services to users regarding to the traffic state that can be congested or free, and the weather state if it rainy with density of rain, or not rainy.
Owing to their peculiar characteristics, V ANETs reqUIre the definition of specific networking techniques, whose feasibility and performance are usually tested by means of simulation. from this point, this thesis also presents a VSNET (Vehicular Sensor NETwork) framework. Also it introduces and evaluates a communication protocol between V ANETs and WSNs using the NCTUns 6.0 simulator. In addition the thesis stimulates the emulation feature that provided by NCTUns simulator to insure the effectiveness of the proposed VSNET framework.
Furthennore the thesis analyzes the performances of the IEEE 802.11 p protocol. The performance evaluation tests three important metrics: the packet losses, the throughput, and the packet delivery ratio, where the result illustrated that IEEE802.11 p gives good results.
