Abstract

An analytical and experimental study have been carried out in order to develop minimum criteria for the design and construction of R.C. bearing walls. These criteria are developed to ensure the structural safety and serviceability of the reinforced consrete bearing walls in resdintial buildings while also providing minimum performance requirements to be used by designres and developers of other systems.
Acomparison between nine different international codes is carried out showing a wide difference between them while comparing the philosophy of the codes themselves or the limits of horizontal and vertical reinforcement.
Afinite element model has been developed fo the analysis of walls under consideration. Numerical evaluation of computer programs for various types of loading conditions has been carried out and showed that due to precompressive nature of walls. Walls are uncracked in most cases.
Experimental work is carried out inna thirty storey dwelling appartment building. Vertical and horisontal straine have been measured due to various floor loads up to twenty floors. Practical results have beeb found to match with the finte element stress calculations.
A practical study covering all the construction and design techniques has been carried out in order to clarify to the reader all aspects that would affect the design of these walls.
