Abstract Two novel surface-active monomers (surfmers) have been prepared via condensation process using Dean and Stark apparatus in presence of xylene. The first surfmer coming from the reaction of Cetyl alcohol with Itaconic anhydride and the second from the reaction of Cetyl alcohol with Maleic anhydride to yield Itaconic and maleic hemiesters with a long alkyl chains respectively and then neutralized by Potassium hydroxide in ethanol and dried to give Monocetyl itaconate Potassium salt (MCI-K) and Monocetyl maleate Potassium salt (MCM-K) respectively These surfmers were characterized for their structures by I.R spectra, 1H NMR, elemental analysis and for their surface active properties, by investigating their surface tension measurements, cloud points and their Hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB The prepared surfmers were utilized in a semi-batch seeded emulsion polymerization of styrene-acrylic latex formulations. The physico-mechanical properties of the prepared lattices were investigated and showed high performance as excellent binders with high stability suitable for waterborne paints. Under volatile organic compounds (VOC) regulations strengthened from the view point of environmental protection, waterborne paints have been an important research topic all over the world, so, all classes of traditional paints are currently being converted into waterborne paints, and all new waterborne paints require new aqueous resins. In the present study, it was aimed to investigate the synthesis of novel waterborne poly (VAc-co-VeoVa) latex containing silicone polymers. The copolymer latex was prepared by the semi-batch emulsion copolymerization of three monomers [vinyl acetate monomer (VAM), vinyl ester of neo-decanoate (VeoVa-10), and vinyltrimethoxy silane (VTMS)], using mixture of (sodium vinyl |
