Abstract

Agrochemicals are used world-wide to improve or protect crops. Fertilizers are applied to obtain good yields from crops that are protected from insects and diseases by the timely use of pesticides. The word use should be interpreted in its widest sense to include the use by any person, whether employer, worker or family, and should also include any associated activity such as handling, storage, transport, spillage and disposal.
The rising fertilizer use accompanying more people eating more has been called exponential and prompted fears of polluted water and consequent diseases. It also has raised alarm about greenhouse warming and an altered global N cycle and thus primary production and diversity of vegetation. In this plethora of issues we concentrate on a few, beginning with the fundamental one of how fast N fertilizers use has risen in the world and in industrial nations.
The manufacturing of agricultural chemicals entails many processes and raw materials. Some agricultural chemicals are batch chemical syntheses that involve exothermic reactions where temperature control and emergency relief sizing are an issue. Hazard evaluations are necessary to assure that all the hazards are discovered and addressed.
Misuse of highly toxic pesticides, coupled with a weak or a totally absent legislative framework in the use of pesticides, is one of the major reasons for the high incidence of pesticide poisoning in developing countries.
The benefits obtained by the use of pesticides are certainly numerous, but the dissemination of large amounts of these compounds to the environment, has led to series of problems affecting both the environment and human health; and their use without the necessary protection can lead to genetic alterations and the possible development of some types of neoplasia. The use of pesticides has also been associated to the induction of congenital malformations and reduced fertility in women, increases in spontaneous abortions, and other reproductive effects in men like sperm toxicity. In recent years, the use of pesticides has been associated with neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.
Conclusion: Agrochemicals can pose hazards to the working population. Agrochemicals can pose hazards to the ambient environment in neighborhood of industries.
