Abstract

A plan-strain finite element analysis procedure is used to investigatigate the stress distribution and load-deformation characteristics of astrip footing on compacted fill underlain by weak clay.
The increamental iterative loading technique is used. Linear strain triangular elements are used to simulate both the footing and underlying soil. The linkage interface elements are used to simulate the common face between the footing and underlying soil. The stress-strain relations are considered linear for footig material while either linear or nonlinear for both the underlying soil and interface behavior.
Hyperbolic models are employed to represent the nonlinear stress-strain relations for both the soil elements and the interface elements. Shear and tension failures in soil and interface elements are taken into account.
The relative stiffness between the footing and the underlying soil is studid, where a wide range of depth to breadth ratios of the footin is investigated to simulate a perfect rigid state and a perfect flexible states, combind with the variation of the modular ratio (E1/E2) to simulate the case of very soft, soft and medium clay beneath the compacted fill layer. The effect of the contact surface roughness is also studied.
In addation, the effect of the compacted fill thickness layer is studied. The results obtained from the analysis concentrates on the contact stress and vertical displacement distribution, the vertical and horizontal stress distribution along the soil depth and the vertical stress distribution on the top of clay layer (beneath the comoacted fill). The results obtained for either rigid or flexible footiog . Comparison between the results obtained from linear and nonlinear finite element method is made.
The results of the analysis show that the compacted over weak foundation soils are effective in reducing the magnitude of the stress induced in the weak subsoil and consequently spreads the normal stress on wider area.
The nonlinear analysis gives higheer stresses and settlement than linear analysis.
