Abstract

In this retrospective study, we reviewed the medical records of children
presenting with NS that attended the nephrology clinic of Cairo university
hospital (ABU ELRESH ) during the last 5 years, from January 1 st
2007to 2011, with minimum 30 months duration of follow up
It was found that 136(71.58) of our cases were males and 54 (28.42) were
female in a ratio of 2.5 : 1.
The age at onset of the disease in our study ranged from 2 :12 years
mean(4.73±1.92) All patients at time of presention were normotensive
except 15 patients have hypertensive (7.9%) ,but during follow up of
diseases 168 patients were hypertensive (88.42%) and22 out of 190 patients
stay normotensive. 13 patients out of 190 patients (6.84%) have heamatturia
11patients of them have microscopic hematuria the rest (2 patients) have
gross hematuria`. 12 patients out of 190 (6.3%) have delayed puberety
during follow up of disease 17 patients out of 190patients (8.9%) have
stunted growth duying follow up of the diseases. All cases were edematous
at presentation whether first attack or relapsers. Edema was mild- mild
puffiness of the face and mild lower limb edema –in 80 cases(42.1%),
moderate –evident puffiness and marked lower limb edema- in 60 cases
(31.6),and severe –the presence of ascites and /or pleural effusion, and/or
genital edema in -50 cases (26.3%) NS is known to have many
complications; high susceptibility to various infections is being the most
important one. Different types of infections were documented in 190 cases
(100%)in our study. Each case may have suffered from one or more types
of infection at some time in the course of the disease. ).
