Abstract

In the field of clinical diagnosis and treatment of patients, several biological parameters have been measured and monitored. The typical physiological parameters that are important to the medical staff include: blood gases measurements, blood pressure monitoring, pulse rate, temperature, and electrocardiogram (ECG), etc. Introduction of a wireless network system for the sensor data results in greater flexibility for both the patient and the medical staff. Wireless connections make use of digital data, which along with other digital data may enable novel clinical as well as logistics applications. With the use of computers or PDA’s at other locations within the hospital, the medical staff would be able to monitor a patient regardless of his or her location as long as he or she is connected to the network.
As the use of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) for clinical applications, such as battlefield, surveillance and Health-Care monitoring expand, so ensuring their security emerges as an important concern. And due to the resource limitations of the sensor nodes in WSNs and their deployment in open environments, WSNs must be secured in order to trust the information they gather.
This thesis implements a temperature sensor node and simulates an ECG sensor node then connects them to a base station (laptop) through a Wireless communication via an XBee module. After that it publishes the temperature and pulse rate to the internet to be monitored through the medical staff.
Since the success of healthcare application depends directly on patient security and privacy for ethic as well as legal reasons, encryption with AES-128bit code is used to secure wireless transmission.
Performance evaluation of a secure Health Care sensor network operating in ISM 2.4GHz radio frequency band is done through power consumption, position of the sensor nodes, payload, and coexistence issues.
