Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of using some communicative activities on developing the speaking skill among Al-azhar first year prep pupils. These activities included discussions, interviews and oral reports. The speaking sub-skills included pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar and comprehensibility. To investigate the problem of the study, the quasi-experimental design was adopted. Sixty pupils of first year prep at El- Gohary Institute were chosen to be the subjects of the study and they were assigned to either an experimental or a control group. The two groups were pre-tested and post tested on the speaking skill. For investigating the differences between the mean scores of the experimental group and those of the control group on the speaking skill, the t- test for independent samples was employed. The results indicated that there was a statistically significant difference between the mean score of the experimental group and that of the control group on the speaking skill favoring the experimental group on the speaking sub-skills of pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar and comprehensibility. Based upon these findings, it was concluded that using the target communicative activities is highly effective in developing the speaking skill (pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar and comprehensibility) of first year prep pupils in English.
