Abstract Child abuse is the physical, sexual, emotional mistreatment, or neglect of children. In the United States, the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) define child maltreatment as any act or series of acts of commission or omission by a parent or other caregiver that results in harm, potential for harm, or threat of harm to a child. Most child abuse occurs in a child’s home, with a smaller amount occurring in the organizations, schools or communities the child interacts with. There are four major categories of child abuse: neglect, physical abuse, psychological/emotional abuse, and child sexual abuse. This study investigated the cognitive functioning and physical development of a sample who experienced neglect, physical abuse, emotional, sexual or a combination. The participants in the study were 602 child 102 abused (61 boys, 41 girls), ranging in age from 1 to 18 years old (M= 8.33) and 500 not abused (261 boys, 239 girls), ranging in age from 1 to 18yrs old (M= 8.11) who have been collected from the out patien July 2010-februsry2011). All enrolled abused children were subjected to the following: • Full history taking with special emphasis on personal history, developmental history, poor school marks and lower educational achievement. • Thorough clinical examination laying stress on physical development through measuring Weight, height, BMI and relation to growth charts. • Childhood experience of care and abuse questionnaire (CECA.Q). To assess degree of physical, sexual, emotional abuse and neglect. • Cognitive function and learning difficulties assessment will be through IQ assessment by stanford bient intelligence scale.(4th edition) for abused cases only. The study revealed that: • 31.38%of the studied children have low average IQ, and 1% have mental retardation was present. • Highly significant difference between both abused and non-abused as regard neglect, mother and father, and emotional father abuse. • Statistically significant inverse correlation between IQ versus emotional and neglect score mother. • Statistically significant positive correlation between total score versus weight and inverse correlation versus IQ. • Shows statistically significant difference as regard neglect mother and physical Mother abuse towards girls more than boys this is due to cultural habit of preferring boys over female. • The study shows that father had higher emotional score, neglect, with highly significant difference in comparison to mother in abused children. Finally it’s advised to increase awareness of child abuse and its negative feedbacks. Trying to make Egypt devoid from child abuse. |
