Abstract

Brain damage is the most important
consequence of head injury, damage to the scalp and sicull is important only as a clue to the possibility of underlying brain pathology.
Brain damage usually results from acoelera— tion—deceleration forces aotin on the brain as a whole. The lesians are widespread and consist of varying amounts of neuronal damage throughout the brain, together with shearing lesions of nerve fibres in the suboortical region and the brain stem, and contusions and lacerations of the cerebral cortex.
After blunt head injury, consciousness is almost always altered to some extent, The patient rapidly regains the ability to speak, and may soon be oriented, but he remains amnesic for the moment of impact and usually some time after.
