Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of a decoding-based program in overcoming some EFL reading problems among primary school pupils. The design of the study is pre- post, one experimental group, (N=50). The sample of the present study consisted of sixth year primary stage at El Wehda –Primary School –Zefta- Garbeya Governorate.The researcher carried out the diagnostic reading comprehension test to reveal the problems which the pupils encounter in this stage. The researcher found that there are many problems among the pupils related to reading comprehension. The pupils can not master all reading skills, so the researcher designed the program for these skills that cannot be mastered. The experimental group pupils were taught using a Decoding Program. The tools of the present study consisted of reading comprehension tests pre- post prepared by the researcher. They were applied to the study before and after implementing the program. Results of the study revealed that the some of EFL reading problems were overcome as a result of teaching through the program. This confirmed that The Decoding Program was effective in overcoming some of EFL reading problems among primary school pupils. |
