Abstract

Flu is a contagious respiratory disease caused by an influenza
virus. Symptoms include fever, chills, sore throat, and cough.
Thousands of people in the U.S. die each year from the flu or its
complications. Most of those who die are the elderly, young children, or
people with compromised immune systems.
Influenza spreads around the world in seasonal epidemics,
resulting in the deaths of hundreds of thousands annually - millions in
pandemic years. Three influenza pandemics occurred in the 20th
century and killed tens of millions of people, with each of these
pandemics being caused by the appearance of a new strain of the virus
in humans.
The aim of this study is to evaluate the status of the new H1N1
swine flu infection in Minoufiya Governorate in the years 2009/2010,
as regards the prevalence and mortality rates, as well as the most risky
groups for infection and complications.
According to the records, we found that the total number of
patients who were infected in 2009/2010 was 400 patients (based on
results of nasopharyngeal swab), but the available files were only for
125 patients, who were actually admitted in hospitals.
In the present study, it was found that the mean age of H1N1
infected patients was 30.9+19.6 years.
Also, according to the present study, infection of H1N1 was
nearly equal in males and females and was more common in urban
areas than rural areas.

common sign .
On studying of risk factor in infected patients, results were, 20%
of patients had chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases ,15% of patients
had cardiac diseases and 12% of patients had diabetes mellitus.
Fate of H1N1 infected patients was as follow, 96% of patients
improved and 4% died during the coarse of illness.
In the present study, 5 patients died, only two patients had no
comorbidity, while the others had other illness, the first had COPD, the
second was diabetic, the third had rheumatic heart diseases.
Pulmonary radiological findings differed significantly between
survivors and non survivors.
