Abstract

Vascular disease is one of the main clinical proplems still unsolved in DIABETES MELLITUS . Atherosclerosis , ‘the most common type causes serious disability occure earlier and more extensivly in diabetics as compared with the nondiabetics of
similar ages The association between diabetes and
atherosclerosis has long been confirmed in man by pathologic clinical • and epidemiologic studies
There are certain risk factors . such as hypertension cigarette smoking obesity and hyperlipidaemia that appear to play a role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis these same factors are operative in diabetes
During recent years $ a renewed interest has arisen in the lipid and lipoprotein abnormalities in diabetc-s . The major reason for this is the unusually high incidence of the atherosclertic vascular disease in diabetic patients
While disorders of glucose and insulin metabolism may partly account for the excess risk-of (atherosclerosis) in diabetes , it is also possible that disodered lipoprotein metabolism plays an important role in the development of premature arterial disease in diabetic patients.
