Abstract Only 4-6% of Egypt’s area IS inhabited and cultivated, these areas suffer various economic, ecological and social problems, thinking about escaping the confinement of the old valley to build new communities as well as maintain the existing communities on the principles of Sustainable Development. This thesis attempts to create a tool to measure and assess the success of an urban community in terms of Sustainability, specifically Social Sustainability. The researcher collected the criteria that cover the three dimensions of Sustainable Development, i.e. Environmental, Economic and Social by looking at the definition and historical background of Sustainable Development and Sustainable Cities, and by studying previous Sustainable Development Indicators (initiatives) as well as by designing a questionnaire to arrange the criteria in order of importance. This is done by entering all the data into the software SPSS to evaluate and rate Sustainable Development which measures the social dimensions in the city under study, then apply this on ’Assiut’ as a case study. |
