Abstract

Global warming is the most important environmental problem the world faces and is ac~epted as the major challenge for human society in the next 100 years. Adaptation to the inevitable impacts and mitigation to reduce their magnitude are both necessary. The increasingly widespread effects of climate change and continuous uncertainty of conventional energy supplies are causing an ever-increasing demand for zero carbon urban development around the world.
The main causes of the global warming are the effect of the greenhouse gases and the use of fossil fuel as a source of energy. Due to the need for urgent action, the greatest challenge is to move rapidly to much increased energy efficiency and to non-fossil-fuel energy sources. The quickest way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is by being more efficient with the way energy is consumed and that is by reducing consumption and transferring to renewable energy sources.
Most of the GHG comes from the city. The city have the most effect on the Global wanning due to their energy patterns and sources, as they are the source of the most traffic, noise and air pollution, therefore the rise of the need of changing the city’s energy pattern in order to reach almost a Zero Carbon emission to reduce its effect Global warming and to reach that percent a Zero Carbon City term has aroused. In order to reach a Zero Carbon City, studying well the energy pattern of common cities and trying to avoid the things that help in increasing the pollution emitted from them should be done. Due to the enormous contribution of transportation and building in C02 emissions, the main concern was to find new designing principles to overcome that in the new settlements.
Of all the design fields, zero carbon urban design has probably the greatest direct impact on the nature of cities and city life. However, urban design and the fundamental principles of how to shape our cities has so far barely featured in the greenhouse debate.
Drawing on lessons learned from the planning and development, Zero carbon city explores the potential of an integrated urbanism approach. The objective being not only to mitigate factors contributing to climate change, but to manage risk, maximize resilience, and promote the successful economic and social growth of the urban community. After studying thoroughly the design principles and examples of the Zero carbon city, and by choosing a rich sector in its natural resources as Almaamoura beach in Alexandria to be an example to apply the principles of zero carbon city, hoping that steps later will be taken to apply them on a wider level as the city itself and thus helping to contribute in decreasing the level of GHG emitted from the cities and hopefully converting most of them into Zero Carbon Cities.
