Abstract Bronchoscopy can be an extremely useful tool for the management of patients in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). Bronchoscopy is done for both diagnostic and therapeutic indications and can be performed with either rigid or flexible instruments. Because flexible instruments can be passed through artificial airways, they are in most cases the instruments of choice for applications in the PICU. With the proper instrument, there is no patient whose airways cannot be effectively and safely evaluated as age and size are not yet limitations. Flexible bronchoscopes suitable for use in children are as small as 2.2 mm in diameter. The aim of this work is to highlight the diagnostic and therapeutic roles of bronchoscopy in children admitted to pediatric intensive care unit. Common indications for pediatric bronchoscopy are stridor, voice disturbance, persistent moist cough, unusual cough, haemoptysis, persisting chest signs such as crackles in a localized area, radiographic infiltrates including persistent atelectasis, recurrent infiltrates, recurrent pneumonia or interstitial disorders. |
