Abstract Compaction of sandy soil is well known method to improve soil characteristics. It has a wide range of applications in civil engineering. The success of compacted soil depends on the correct judgment of its field density comparing to maximum density measured in the laboratory. This research is concerning this point i.e. (correct and quick judgment). In this study method of measuring field density of sandy soil as well as soil parameter has been developed using a developed apparatus (convert the large hand penetrometer needle to become motorized large penetrometer needle). The research has been tackled in tow fronts: A) - Laboratory work B) - theoretical work In the laboratory work and beside the traditional soil mechanics experiments, a large number (445 tests in laboratory) of samples of sandy soil have been prepared with different relative densities in laboratory. The resistance of penetration of different sandy samples has been determined by both hand use and developed apparatus. from all laboratory test as well as field test soil parameters such as internal friction angle, young’s modules and relative density have been determined. Relations have been developed between the resistance of penetration and internal friction angle, young’s modules and dry density. By knowing, the resistance of penetration in the field using the developed apparatus, the soil parameters could be determined. Hence a correct and quick judgment on soil may be obtained.85 penetration tests in laboratory on simulation tank made of fiberglass of 50 cm diameter and 50 cm height have carried out to be close from field and used for calibration.
