Abstract

Stomach ulcer still a medical problem that face several patients in a wide range of age of both sexes worldwide. Long term uses of
nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as Aspirin are
the second most common cause of ulcers after H. pylori. Enormous
drugs are available for the treatment of gastric ulcers, but these
drugs proclaim serious side effects. Therefore the aim of this study
was to evaluate the antiulcerative effects of the water extracts of
four plant herbs individually and in a mixture toward Aspirin
namely; chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla), turmeric (Curcuma
longa), ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc.) and licorice (Glycyrrhiza
glabra). Sixty five malealbino wistar rats were divided into 13
groups, two different concentration 200 and 400 mg/kg bodyweight
of herb extracts or their mixture against 400 mg/kg Aspirin were
used. Additionally, Omeprazole 20 mg/kg was used as standard
antiulcer drug. Gastric juice volume, acidity, pH value, ulcer index,
histological changes, complete blood picture, serum GOT and GPT,
counts of total viable bacteriaand molds were measured to
determine the antiulcerative effects of these herbs. Results obtained
showed that:
The effect of aspirin and plant herbs on rat’s body and
organs weight.
No significant changes in the body weights were observed in
control positive (aspirin) as compared to control negative group.
Similar observation was also noticed in Omeprazole, turmeric 200
mg, ginger 200 mg, mixture 200 mg as well as both concentration of
licorice. On the other hand all other herbextracts including turmeric 400
mg, ginger 400 mg, mixture 400 mg and both concentrations of
chamomile showed significant increasein weight gain compared with
control positive (P ≤0.05).

There was significant increase in stomach weight in control
positive group compared with control negative (P ≤0.05). Similar
observation was also archived by Omeprazole and chamomile 400 mg.
Whereby, all other extracts showed significant attenuation and
reduction in stomach weight to the levels of control negative (P ≤
0.05).
It was observed that there was no significant deference in relative
weight of liver between control positive and negative groups. Where,
Omeprazole and both concentrations of licorice exert significant
reduction compared to control positive (P ≤0.05).
No significant deference on kidney weight between control
positive and negative. On the other hand Omeprazole and all other
herb extracts at both concentrationsexhibited significant reduction on
kidney weight (P ≤0.05).
No significant deference concerning spleen weight, neither
between control positive and negative nor between all other
treatments.
It was noticed that there was significant increase (P ≤0.05) in
heart weight of control positive compared to control negative group.
Moreover all herbs extracts as well as Omeprazole showed significant
decrease (P ≤0.05) compared to control positive.
Significant increase (P ≤0.05) in lungs weight of control positive
compared to control negative group was observed. In addition
Omeprazole, ginger 400 mg and licorice 400 mg exert significant
reduction compared to control positive (P ≤0.05).
The effects of herb extracts on Aspirin induced gastric ulcer
Effect of aspirin onulcer induction
Results showed that, single dose of Aspirin (400mg/kg) for two
consequence days was able to induce sever ulcer on stomach of
5.50±0.25 mm length.
