Abstract The planted area of rice was 1.46 million feddan in 2006. It is considered the most important cereal crop in the world, from view-point of production and food supply. Crop residues are one of the most critical proplems, which face the farmer in Egypt. The quantity of crop residues in Egypt reached about 3.28 million ton per year. Rice straw causes a problem on environmental pollution during threshing specially by thresher machines. This research aims to study the development of a system for handling of hay between the threshing machine and hay baler, with reduction of air pollution surrounding the labourers with hay chaff and dust. This work deals with a design of a connector tube between the Barmeel thresher آلة الدراس البرميلية) ) and the hay baler. The measurements were carried out during 2005 - 2006 and 2006 - 2007 seasons, to evaluate the designed unit. These experiments include tractor size, fuel consumption, feed rate, energy requirements and air pollution. It was found that during baling rice straw, the average fuel consumption of ”Massey Fergusson” tractor was less than ”Nasr” tractor with percentage of 41.14%. The productivity of the baler was higher using the ”Nasr” tractor than ”Massey Fergusson” tractor. The traditional method of threshing rice gave higher values of air pollution compared to Barmeel thresher آلة الدراس البرميلية)) with the designed connector tube.
