Abstract I’ This thesis includes three chapters; the first of which is a review on the identification of the different components in each constituent of myrrh, and its taxonomy, as well as the medicinal action and uses of different species of myrrh. The second chapter is divided into five subchapters. where the first of which describes the strategy for isolating the bioactive component of myrrh, while the second one includes the gas chromatography/ Mass Spectrometry (Ge/MS) study of the oily fraction, volatile oil and the precipitate obtained from extraction with n-hexane. The third and the fourth sub-chapter deal with the determination of the bioactive component and the evaluation of molluscicidal activity of myrrh on Biomphalaria alexandrina snails and the last one studies the statistical analysis of the results of biological activities. The extraction of myrrh with petroleum ether, benzene, n-hexane and diethyl ether gave oily products. When the n-hexane extract was left aside, a precipitate was found. Filtration followed by evaporation of the mother liquor gave the same oil which was isolated from the other organic solvents. The oily product as well as the volatile oil which was obtained from steam distillation of crude powdered myrrh was / fractionated using column chromatography. |
