Abstract

The present study included two experiments. The first one aimed to study the effect of injecting Japanese quail eggs with L-Carnitine (200 and 400 µg/egg) or vitamin B6 (100 and 150 µg/egg) on embryonic development, posthatch performance and some physiological traits. The second one aimed to study the effect of dietary supplementation of L-Carnitine (100 and 200 mg/kg diet) or vitamin B6 (2 and 3 mg/kg diet) on growing Japanese quail performance and some physiological traits.
Obtained results of the first experiment showed that in ovo administration with L-Carnitine or vitamin B6 significantly improved relative embryo weight, live body weight, body weight gain, abdominal fat percentage, H/L ratio, some immunological traits, plasma levels of total proteins, globulin and cholesterol. While, yolk sac percentage at 15th day of incubation, plasma total lipids and breast muscle percentage were affected significantly only by L-Carnitine administration. Hatchability percentage was significantly decreased in all injected groups in comparable to un-injected group.
Results of the second experiment showed that dietary L-Carnitine and vitamin B6 supplementation significantly improved live body weight, body weight gain, breast muscles percentage, H/L ratio and some immunological traits. However, abdominal fat percentage and plasma levels of total proteins, globulin, total lipids and cholesterol were affected significantly only by dietary L-Carnitine supplementation.
For both experiments, feed intake, feed conversion ratio, carcass traits, packed cell volume, hemoglobin concentration, A/G ratio and plasma levels of albumin and glucose were not significantly affected by different treatments.
In conclusion, L-Carnitine and vitamin B6 administration through egg injection or dietary supplementation had positive effects on performance and physiological traits of Japanese quails.
