Abstract

The needle stick injury form the major risk among the nurses that possible to cause a vulnerability to serious diseases which threatens the life is still considered one of the risks heedless. The study aims to assess the incidence of a needle stick injury (NSI) and the factors associated with them. The study was conducted at the intensive care unit, emergency room and operation rooms of Zagazig University Hospitals. The subject of the present study includes all available nurses working in the previously mentioned areas. Tool for data collection included interview questionnaire sheet to assess the incidence of needle stick injury and associated factors among the nurses. The result of the study showed that the study nurses ranged in age from 20 to 43 years old, more than two-thirds of the nurses had needle stick injury (NSI), all nurses reported that overfilling of the sharp disposal boxes is the main precipitating factor for needle stick injury followed with Continuous interruption during working by two thirds of the nurses .More than two fifths of the nurses have NSI during drawing venous blood sample, slightly less than half of them have NSI at the night shift .More than two fifths of the study nurses were wearing no gloves during incidence of NSI. The hospital doesn’t take any action after reporting the incidence of NSI by nurses in all cases. All of nurses reported that the training program for prevention of NSI needs improvement of some points. More than half of the nurses have satisfactory mean level of knowledge regarding NSI. Significant relation between ages, gender, years of experience, qualification, area of working, and type of procedure and incidence of needle stick injury. In the other hand there is no significant relation between receiving infection control training course, time of shift, and incidence of NSI. Moreover, there is significant relation between incidence of NSI and Knowledge about handling the used needles, and no significant relation between knowledge about sharp disposal and standard precautions. In conclusion there is high incidence of NSI among nurses and No significant relation between incidence of NSI and mean level of knowledge. The study recommended the deep presence of training program about prevention, management, reporting of incidence of NSI, and follow up measurements.
