Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate and compare the clinical and radiographic effects of Enamel matrix derivative (EMD),Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and Ferric sulphate as
pulpotomy agents in primary molars. The study comprised 64primary lower first molars. Thirty-two children with an age range of
4- 7years, were divided into 2 groups:
A.16 patients were treated with Mineral trioxide aggregate on one side; with ferric sulphate control on the contralateral side.
(MTA group) B.16 patients were treated with Emdogain on one side; withB.16 patients were treated with Emdogain on one side; with
ferric sulphate control on the contralateral side.(EMD group) The teeth were restored with IRM and stainless steel crowns.
They were clinically and radiographically assessed at 3 and 6 months intervals. Radiograhic assessment was done using Diogra digital system.
Clinical follow-up of MTA-treated teeth revealed a 100% success rate. FS-treated teeth showed 87.5% success rate at 6 months interval. EMD-treated teeth showed 87.5% success rate at6 months.
Radiographically, MTA-treated teeth showed 50% success rate at 6 months. The most common radiographic failure was nonperforating
internal root resorption which was not recognized by many others as a failure.`
FS-treated teeth (control group) also showed 50% success rate at 6 months intervals. The failure was represented in the formof internal and external root resorption. Thus the difference
between MTA and FS was statistically insignificantEMD-treated teeth showed 25% success rate at 6 months interval. The most common finding was non-perforating internal
root resorption. This high failure rate was probably related to the direct contact of the pulp stumps with IRM causing persistent
inflammation. FS-treated teeth (control) showed 50 % success rate with statistically significant difference from EMD.
The high radiographic failure rate in comparison with the clinical findings may be attributed to the use of a strictly standardized radiographic technique using paralleling technique and Digora digital system. Thus, detecting the slightest changes in the radiographs.
